The annual Seychelles Carnival is one of the premier events hosted by the popular Indian Ocean tourist destination. Every year arrivals come from Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East to enjoy Seychelles luxury holidays among the music, dancing, cultural displays, and great food. The 2012 event should have no trouble living up to the hype, especially if UAE airline Emirates has anything to say about it.

Emirates have been a sponsor of the event in years past. This year they are the Official Airline of 2012 Carnival, and have begun a new promotion designed to get more of Seychelles’ youth directly involved in the celebration. To that end they have launched a drawing contest to encourage young Seychellois to help the airline designed its 2012 float entry. Float builders will incorporate the winning drawing into their design, though to what extent has not been disclosed.

To participate, students must be between the ages of 6 and 12, and must be able to embrace the theme of this year’s festival, which is “Mix of Cultures.” Emirates are asking all the drawings to include dancers from various cultures around the world including Asia and South America. Emirates’ Manager for the Indian Ocean, Oomar Ramtoola, told reporters that his airline is “extremely pleased to launch this competition in the Seychelles,” noting that the drawing contest will hopefully encourage participation among the nation’s youth.

“Emirates supported the Seychelles Carnival last year, and we recently announced that we will be the Official Airline for the 2012 Carnival,” he added. “This drawing competition is yet another demonstration of our involvement in this major event.”

The Seychelles Ministry of Tourism has also made known its pleasure in working with Emirates. Their relationship is just one of many that have been cultivated over the past couple of years as the Ministry has worked diligently to raise Seychelles’ profile on the world travel stage. Last year she saw a steady increase in arrivals over 2010, a trend that is expected to continue through 2012 and even into next year.

Carnival officials are cognizant of all the work that’s been done thus far and are planning an event to top all others. Seychelles Carnival 2012 will be held in Victoria to from March 2-4. Tourists planning to visit Seychelles this year could not pick a better time to go. There will be representatives from 38 countries contributing the best of the best, from their own carnivals, to the Seychelles event. There will be plenty of colourful floats, live music, and interactive events for visitors of all ages. There’s still time to book your holiday now if you don’t want to miss what promises to be one of the most spectacular carnivals of the 2012 season.

Do you love the outdoors? Why not try camping this holiday season? There is no better way to connect with nature.

South Africa has plenty of great camping spots – about one thousand of them, dotted all over the country. There are camping sites for every pocket and every taste.

Some sites offer only basic amenities, which usually include restrooms, kitchen and laundry services. Others have tents equipped with king-size beds and en-suite bathrooms.

Some camping sites are small, peaceful parks. Others are action-filled holiday resorts, and may feature swimming, hiking, canoeing, fishing, rock climbing, horseback riding, and so on.

Here are some of the most popular destinations for a camping holiday in South Africa:

The Eastern Escarpment

Do you long to get in touch with mountains, canyons, or waterfalls?

The Blyde River Canyon area is just the place for you. Choose among several camping sites and remember to visit the must-see places: God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and Pilgrims Rest.

The Kruger National Park

Observing wildlife in its natural habitat is the holiday of your dreams?

The world-renowned Kruger Park is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals. It has many delightful camps.

The North-East Coast

Kosi Bay, Sodwana Bay, iSimangaliso, St Lucia: all of these places have camping sites with good, tidy facilities. You will stay close to the beaches and get a chance to visit the nearby game reserves abundant with wildlife. Activities include turtle nesting tours, whale watching, game viewing tours, fishing, kayaking, hiking, etc.

The South and Wild Coast

If you yearn for the bustle and the excitement of holiday crowds, you should opt for a camping site near popular holiday resorts such as Margate. Others will head for more secluded sites on the South Coast. Or, even better, head further south to the Wild Coast. Having successfully resisted the onrush of property development, the Wild Coast community is now concerned with the proposed highway construction and strip mining. So, visit it while it is still in its unspoiled beauty!

The Drakensberg Mountains

Lush greenery in the summer, all hues of yellow, red and brown in the autumn…

Whatever the season, camping in the Drakensberg is an unforgettable experience. You can set base in one of the many camping sites and venture onto day trails; you can hike with a tent on your back and sleep in the mountains; you can even sleep in a cave (do book ahead of time, or you may find “your” cave already occupied).

The Great Karoo

The stark beauty of the Karoo semi-desert is best enjoyed from one of several good camping sites. Spending a night or two out in the South African great wide open is a must, because the Karoo is one of the best places in the world for star gazing.

The Garden Route

This part of South Africa has it all: giant yellowwood forests, lagoons, gorges, sandy beaches, rocky headlands… Set your tent in a camping site near the coast, in the vicinity of Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, Wilderness or Mossel Bay, and immerse yourself into the beauty of the Garden Route.

The Western Cape

In this area, you will find camping sites situated along the coast, in the mountains and at several dams and lakes. When in Western Cape, visit the Table Mountain, Cape Point and, of course, at least two or three wine farms.

The West Coast

Surfing in summer and a carpet of flowers in the spring: that, in a nutshell, is why the West Coast is a favourite among surfers and nature lovers. There are several good camping sites in the area.

You will find many comprehensive directories of camping and caravan sites for your South African holiday on the internet.

As for equipment, preparation is crucial. It is advisable to plan well in advance. What to bring on a camping trip depends on the type of camping site you opt for, whether you are going with children or not, the season of the year, and so on.

The CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board used the unlikely venue of Port Louis this week to promote one of his country’s most important annual tourist events, according to a report from Trade Online this week.

Alain St. Ange took advantage of a transit stop in the Mauritian capital to meet local press as he works on raising the visibility of the 2012 Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands “Carnaval International de Victoria”.

As well as publicising the Seychelles event, the press conference served to highlight the excellent seasonal deals available right now on Mauritius holidays all inclusive packages. While keen to discuss the Seychelles Carnaval, St. Ange was side-tracked by Mauritian media representatives who were dissatisfied with Seychelles failure to involve Mauritius tourism interests in the event.

While acknowledging the attractive packages available for Mauritius holidays all inclusive and the importance of Mauritius to regional tourism, the Seychelles tourism chief argued that the Carnaval was good for Indian Ocean unity. He told media that his country was still hopeful that Mauritius would have a presence at the Vanilla Islands event which showcased the regional country and people.

“The Community of Nations is coming to our region and the press are all descending for the carnival,” said St. Ange, adding that it would be desirable for the Indian Ocean island leaders to be seen standing together in unity as their people demonstrated the unique culture and diversity of the region.

The Seychelles event is expected to showcase Sega, the traditional music shared by Seychelles, La Reunion and Mauritius and St. Ange argued that this would present to the world the historical links shared by the three Indian Ocean islands.

The “Carnaval International de Victoria” is expected to attract a large number of tourists to the Seychelles. The secretary general of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), Talib Rifai, has already signalled his intention to attend after receiving a delegation from the Seychelles at his office in Spain late last month. The Seychelles delegation invited Rifai to attend the Carnaval as guest of honour.

Mauritius is expected to benefit from the tourist influx to the Seychelles for the event as many will arrive on Indian Ocean package tours and many are expected to take advantage of the many Mauritius holidays all inclusive deals available at present.

The timing is ideal for Mauritius, coming as it does after the peak season and the fall in regular tourism to the island. The local hospitality is looking forward to a mini-peak as revellers from the Seychelles Carnaval arrive to catch their breath after the days of frantic activity in the Vanilla Islands.

Mauritius tourism traditionally suffers a slump between the end of the peak season and the beginning of the milder, dry weather in May, and the spillover from the Seychelles is expected to give a much-needed shot in the arm.

In what appears to be a dramatic turnaround from last year’s very profitable tourism season, some in Mauritius are warning that occupancy rates for the island’s hotels will be significantly lower for 2012. In a report from Bloomberg published on March 5, Sun Resorts Limited’s Tommy Wong predicted an occupancy rate between 50% and 55% this year. For the 2011 calendar year the rate was near 65%

There are a number of factors contributing to the predictions, including the ongoing European debt crisis which is causing stagnation in both the UK and French economies. Seeing that those two countries account for nearly 70% of all the visitors to Mauritius, their economic woes would easily reduce travel to Mauritius. Secondly, the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Latin American regions are a bit more attractive this year because they’re cheaper for Europeans looking for overseas holidays.

A third factor, and one that is largely seen as positive, is the fact that there are several new hotels opening in Mauritius this year as well as a handful of others that are expanding. The increase in beds is being undertaken now in anticipation of gradually increasing numbers through 2014. Although the total number of new beds realised isn’t clear, if it were a 10% increase that would account for a good portion of the lower projections for 2012.

Regardless of the causes, the reduced occupancy rates should result in better deals for all inclusive Mauritius holidays. As hotels scramble to fill their beds it is quite likely they’ll be offering very good deals on family packages, beach weddings and honeymoons, and even corporate and business gatherings. And their direct competition with Seychelles and Jamaica should make for even better pricing. The key for European travellers is to keep an eye out for deals and contact a tour company as soon as something becomes available.

The projected numbers are, of course, no reflection on Mauritius itself. The island continues to be one of the favourite tourist destinations for both Europeans and Asians looking for a tropical holiday in a luxury destination. All of the five-star resorts will continue to operate with the same high quality staff and service travellers have come to expect. All-inclusive deals will still provide airfare, transfer to and from the airport, and meals and drinks.

And of course, Mauritius’ natural beauty will never be compromised by the economy. Her crystal-clear waters will remain just as inviting, her golden sunshine just as bright, and her volcanic mountain peaks just as majestic. All of the things that make Mauritius such a desirable destination will continue to be there even as Europe and her economy work to settle themselves down. At that point there is little doubt occupancy rates will return to normal. Until then, this might be the perfect time to get a really good deal on your next Mauritius holiday.
